I acknowledge the passing of Mary Ryland, a much-loved former Deputy Principal and Acting Principal of Stella Maris College, who passed away on 14 July aged 75. For generations of Stella students, Mary was far more than a school leader. She was a steady, compassionate presence who listened without judgement, understood young people and had a rare ability to bring out the best in every student. Former students remember her warmth, wisdom and kindness, and many credit her with changing their lives for the better. Mary's contribution to Stella Maris extended across decades. She served as Acting Principal in 1988 and again in 2009, and remained deeply connected to the College and its community. Her service was recognised through a community service award in 2014 and inclusion on the 2016 NSW Local Women of the Year Honour Roll. I was honoured to attend Mary's funeral at St Kieran's Church, Manly Vale, on 29 July, alongside her family, friends, former colleagues and generations of grateful students. I extend my sincere condolences to Helen, Mary's brothers Ian and Warren McAlister, and all who loved her. Mary Ryland leaves an enduring legacy of faith, service and care on the Northern Beaches.
