Community Recognition Statement - Black Cockatoo Screening

I commend the incredible work of northern beaches resident Jo Mawson Lee, who recently organised a community screening of Jane Hammond's filmBlack Cockatoo Crisis. The documentary details the harrowing plight of the endangered species and the severe impacts of deforestation on our native flora and fauna.

Wildlife corridors are vital for black cockatoos to move around. In Wakehurst we are lucky enough to have black cockatoos, including in the bushland surrounding Lizard Rock. The land is facing a development proposal that my community and I strongly oppose. I thank Jo, the Bushland Guardians—Neil Evers, Professor Rico Merkert and David Li—and Federal member for Mackellar Dr Sophie Scamps for their contributions to the event. I admire and appreciate the time, effort and energy that Jo, in particular, put into this important event. It is important our communities are informed and, most of all, actively engaged in protecting our local environment.
