Community Recognition Statement - Phil Colman

I consider Phil Colman, a lifelong resident of Collaroy, to be a living treasure. Phil's association with Long Reef has been lifelong. Phil was a driving force in the area being declared an aquatic reserve over 40 years ago and in the establishment of the Environmental Education Room in the former boat shed at Fishermans Beach at Collaroy.

Having observed and studied the marine environment most of his life, Phil has become the expert that educators, scientists, journalists, government departments, students and interested members of the public—even politicians—go to for information about the fauna and the marine life at Long Reef Aquatic Reserve. He even writes books on Long Reef reserve. Phil was a founding executive member of the Narrabeen Lagoon Committee in 1977, which was formed to protect and preserve Narrabeen Lagoon and its remaining natural catchment. He provided scientific information and played a leading role in organising public meetings and campaigns. I thank Phil for giving so generously to his community and to our community. Thanks for just being a bloke.
