Community Recognition Statement - Steven Chiddy

Today I thank and congratulate retiring senior firefighter Steven Chiddy on over 40 years of service to Fire and Rescue NSW. Steve joined the then NSW Fire Brigade in 1983. He worked in stations across Sydney, including over 20 years at Dee Why.

Steve worked at many major incidents, including residential and commercial property fires; storm and flood incidents, including the 1999 Sydney hailstorm; and all major bushfires to have hit New South Wales over the past 40 years, including the tragic fires of 2019‑20. Steve is also a recipient of the National Medal, the Fire and Rescue NSW Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, and several certificates and commendations for service. His last day was at Dee Why station on 10 July, a 24‑hour shift that included a house fire and a powerline down, and visits—thank goodness—from his family and senior officers. Steve's retirement plans include travelling Australia with his wife, Cindy, in his new camper and spending precious time with his family. Enjoy retirement, Steve.
