I congratulate the hardworking teams at the French‑speaking Association of the North Shore and the Killarney Heights Public School P&C on putting together their fifth annual World Music Day celebration on Sunday 21 June. World Music Day began in France in 1982 with a simple and joyful idea: Music should be shared freely, out in public, and bring people together. It was awesome to see that spirit alive and well in Killarney Heights, a community with such strong and passionate French-speaking connections. This year's celebration included the new battle of the bands, at which I was honoured—and scared—to help out as a judge. It was an extraordinary reminder of the depth of young musical talent across the northern beaches. Families enjoyed live music, great food and carnival rides and games, with local businesses backing prizes, including a paid gig showcase at the local pub for battle of the bands winners, and recording sessions and singing workshops. I thank the organisers for their huge efforts to bring the community together for such an amazing day of celebration. I look forward to attending next year, even as a judge.
